Job Title: Controller

Reports to: President

Job Purpose

The Controller is a key financial leader responsible for managing accounting operations across multiple entities within a construction organization. This role ensures accurate consolidated financial reporting, compliance with GAAP and tax regulations, and provides strategic insights to support business growth. The Controller oversees job costing, cash flow management, intercompany transactions, and internal controls while collaborating with project managers, executives, and administrative teams.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Financial Oversight & Reporting

  • Direct and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process for multiple entities.
  • Prepare consolidated financial statements and ensure accuracy across all entities.
  • Oversee WIP (Work-in-Progress) schedules, revenue recognition, and progress billing.
  • Maintain audit-ready records and coordinate external audits.

2. Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis

  • Develop and monitor budgets for each entity and consolidated operations.
  • Perform variance analysis and provide actionable insights to leadership.
  • Support strategic planning and financial modeling for growth initiatives.

3. Job Costing & Project Financials

  • Ensure accurate job costing for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors.
  • Monitor project profitability and collaborate with project managers on cost control.

4. Cash Flow & Treasury Management

  • Manage cash flow across entities, including intercompany transfers.
  • Oversee banking relationships and ensure liquidity for ongoing projects.

5. Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Implement and maintain strong internal controls for multi-entity operations.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, bonding requirements, and certified payroll.

6. Team Leadership & Development

  • Supervise accounting staff and delegate responsibilities effectively.
  • Provide training and mentorship to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

7. Systems & Process Optimization

  • Optimize accounting systems for multi-entity reporting and job cost tracking.
  • Drive automation and process improvements to reduce cycle times.

Competencies

  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP and construction accounting principles.
  • Expertise in multi-entity consolidation and intercompany transactions.
  • Proficiency in Sage 300 (or similar construction accounting software) and Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Working Conditions

Office environment with standard equipment. Occasional extended hours during close periods.

Physical Requirements

Primarily sedentary; occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Full-time, Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (subject to change). Extended hours may be required.

Travel

Minimal; occasional travel for audits or banking meetings.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including multi-entity consolidation.
  • Construction industry experience required.
  • Strong understanding of job costing, WIP schedules, and compliance documentation.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Valid driver’s license.
