Overview Job ID: 291649 • Location: Georgia College & State Univ • Full Time • Regular Executive Director of Historic Museums (Administrative Officer, Academic Liaison, and Chief Curator) serves Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion, the Sallie Ellis Davis House, Andalusia, and other historic museums as assigned. The role oversees public relations, policy making, planning, staffing, revenue generation and fundraising, and directs and coordinates educational programming under the direction of the Executive Director of the School of Continuing & Professional Studies. Responsibilities Operations Management – Oversee day-to-day operations of the historic museums to ensure quality, efficiency, and the highest professional standards and museum practices, including continued accreditation. Supervision – Ensure museums are appropriately staffed and that staff are well trained and professional. Directing – Provide oversight for ongoing historic preservation and maintenance; coordinate with university offices to ensure maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and security of buildings, grounds, collections, and assets; maintain historic integrity and fabric per professional standards. Coordinating – Manage public relations efforts; conduct research related to the museums and collections; coordinate exhibits and educational programming, tours, and events to attract visitors and promote understanding. Budget – Implement museum budgets within university guidelines; support fundraising, grant writing, revenue-generating programs, and acquisition of period-appropriate collection pieces with proper interpretation and conservation. Other – Assume other duties as assigned to ensure effective operation of museums, grounds, and collections. Academic Liaison – Collaborate with the Flannery O'Connor Institute for the Humanities to integrate scholarly research with public programming; foster academic partnerships and interdisciplinary studies; develop educational initiatives and publications to enhance reputation. Note: Upon hire, candidates with SACSCOC-qualified credentials may be eligible for appointment as non-tenure track faculty. Required Qualifications Educational Requirements – Master’s degree from a regionally accredited university in History, Public History, Architectural History, Museum Studies, or related discipline. Required Experience – 3 or more years of administrative and/or leadership experience in an academic, museum, and/or research setting (e.g., director of a museum, center or institute director). Preferred Qualifications Preferred Educational Qualifications – Ph.D. from a regionally accredited university. Preferred Experience – Understanding of the academic environment. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Abilities – Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders; communicate effectively; supervise and lead others; plan and organize work; set and achieve goals; exercise sound judgment; take initiative and be resourceful; identify and review problems, make independent decisions; think tactically and strategically; function independently; take risks and learn from mistakes. Knowledge – Knowledge of American history; background in Public History, Architectural History, or Historic Preservation; knowledge of professional museum standards, ethics, and practices. Skills – Demonstrated history of museum exhibitions and programming, research, education, public outreach, and service; experience supervising staff and volunteers; fiscal management; excellent computer, written, and verbal communication skills.
